PSLE Chinese Weightage & Marks Breakdown 2026

📅 Published: August 2026  ·  ✍️ By: PSLE Hero Editorial Team

PSLE Chinese (华文) has four assessed components worth a combined 200 raw marks. Understanding exactly how those marks are distributed — and which papers carry the most weight — is the essential first step to smart revision planning. This reference guide gives parents the complete picture at a glance.

Weightage and format details are checked against the SEAB 2026 PSLE formats page. Duration estimates for Oral are approximate; exact timing is at the examiner's discretion.

1. Weightage at a Glance

Each paper contributes a different percentage to the final PSLE Chinese Achievement Level (AL) score. The percentages below are the official MOE weightages:

TOTAL 100% 200 Converted to Achievement Level (AL1–AL8) using standardised score

⚠️ Common confusion: The raw marks total 200, but each paper is converted to a weighted score before being combined. Paper 2's 90 raw marks represent 45% of the grade — not 45 out of 200. Schools report raw marks; SEAB converts these to the final standardised AL score.

3. Paper-by-Paper Breakdown

✍️
Paper 1 — Composition (作文)
20% of PSLE Chinese · 40 marks · 50 minutes
40
marks

Students choose one of two prompts:

  • Q1
看图作文 — Picture-based Composition A series of pictures tells a story. Students write a narrative based on the images. Recommended for most students — the images provide a storyline scaffold.
  • Q2
命题作文 — Topic-based Composition A title or theme is given. Students must construct their own plot and structure from scratch. Suitable for students with strong Chinese writing ability and rich vocabulary.

✅ Marking criteria: Content (内容) — is the story coherent and on-topic? Language (表达) — vocabulary range, idiom use, sentence variety. Structure (结构) — clear beginning (起), development (承), climax (转), and resolution (合).

📖
Paper 2 — Language Use & Comprehension (语文应用与阅读理解)
45% of PSLE Chinese · 90 marks · 1 hour 40 minutes
90
marks

The single most important paper — 45% of the total grade. It has four sections:

  • MCQ
语文应用 — Language Use (25 items) Multiple-choice questions testing vocabulary, grammar rules, character usage, and sentence construction. Each item is 2 marks. Total: ~50 marks.
  • Cloze
短文填空 — Cloze Passage A passage with blanks. Students select the appropriate word from options provided. Tests contextual vocabulary and language feel.
  • RC 1
阅读理解(一)— Comprehension Passage 1 A shorter passage followed by comprehension questions (mix of MCQ and short-answer). Tests literal and inferential reading.
  • RC 2
阅读理解(二)— Comprehension Passage 2 A longer, more complex passage with open-ended short-answer questions. Tests deeper comprehension, inference, and the ability to express ideas in Chinese. This sub-section is where most marks are won or lost.

✅ Time tip for Paper 2: With 100 minutes for 90 marks, allocate roughly: MCQ = 30 min, Cloze = 10 min, RC1 = 20 min, RC2 = 35 min. Students who run out of time on RC2 leave the most marks on the table.

👂
Paper 3 — Listening Comprehension (听力理解)
10% of PSLE Chinese · 20 marks · ~30 minutes
20
marks

A pre-recorded audio is played. Students answer 10 multiple-choice items based on what they hear.

  • ×10
MCQ Listening Items (2 marks each) Items are based on dialogues, announcements, or short narratives. Students must identify the correct answer from 4 options. The recording is played twice.

✅ Strategy: Read all 4 answer options before the recording plays. Circle key words in the question. On the second play, confirm your answer — do not change unless you clearly heard a different answer the second time.

🗣️
Oral Examination (口试)
25% of PSLE Chinese · 50 marks · ~10–15 minutes
50
marks

Conducted individually with a preparation period before the session begins. Follow the school’s instructions for the exact arrangements.

  • 10
朗读短文 — Reading Aloud Students read a printed passage aloud. Marked on pronunciation accuracy (tones, consonants), phrasing, pace, and expressive delivery.
  • 40
看录像说话 — Video-based Conversation Students watch a short video clip and respond to the examiners' questions. Marked on content relevance, personal experience shared, vocabulary range, structure, and fluency. This component carries 80% of the oral marks.

✅ Key insight: The 看录像说话 Video Conversation (40 marks) is now the dominant oral component. A student who reads aloud adequately but speaks confidently in the conversation can still score very highly overall. Prioritise Video Conversation practice over Reading Aloud.

4. Revision Priority Guide

Given the weightage, here is the recommended revision priority order — from highest impact on your child's AL score to lowest:

1
Paper 2 — Language Use & Comprehension (语文应用与阅读理解)
45%
2
Oral — Video Conversation & Reading Aloud (口试)
25%
3
Paper 1 — Composition (写作)
20%
4
Paper 3 — Listening Comprehension (听力理解)
10%

📌 Practical implication: For every 1 hour of Chinese revision time, spend roughly 27 minutes on Paper 2, 15 minutes on Oral practice, 12 minutes on composition, and 6 minutes on listening — proportional to the marks at stake. Students who over-invest in composition (which is enjoyable to write) while neglecting Paper 2 MCQ are leaving marks on the table.

5. How PSLE Chinese Converts to an Achievement Level (AL)

PSLE Chinese is not marked out of 200 for your AL score. SEAB applies a standardisation process that compares your child's performance against the cohort. The table below is a general parent guide — exact AL cut-offs vary year by year based on the cohort's performance.

Achievement Level Rough School-Paper Equivalent What It Means
AL1 Consistently 90%+ across all papers Excellent; highest performance band
AL2 ~80–89% consistently Very strong; comfortably above average
AL3 ~70–79% Good; above average
AL4 ~60–69% Average; meets expected standard
AL5 ~50–59% Below average; revision needed
AL6–AL8 Below 50% Significant support required

📌 Higher Chinese (高级华文) bonus: Students who sit Higher Chinese and achieve AL1 or AL2 receive a 2-point deduction from their PSLE score aggregate (lower = better). This can be the difference between Secondary 1 posting to an Express or IP school. Worth the effort for capable students.

6. Typical PSLE Chinese Exam Schedule
