PSLE Science Systems: A Complete Parent Guide to All Human and Plant Systems

The Systems theme is one of the five core themes in PSLE Science (the others are Diversity, Cycles, Interactions, and Energy). For the 2026 PSLE (following the MOE 2023 Primary Science syllabus), the Systems theme covers the Plant System and three Human Body Systems: the Digestive System, the Respiratory System, and the Circulatory System. Understanding how each part works AND how the systems work together is key to scoring in both MCQ (Booklet A) and open-ended (Booklet B) questions.

The Plant System

(Primary 4 topic — Plant System: parts and functions)

Parts and their functions:

Photosynthesis equation (word form):
Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen (in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll)

Key precision vocabulary: 'absorb' (roots/water), 'transport' (stem), 'manufacture/produce food' (leaves), NOT 'make food from sunlight' (imprecise).

Common mistakes:

  • Saying roots 'drink water' — use 'absorb'
  • Saying leaves 'breathe' — use 'take in' or 'release'
  • Confusing that stems 'store water' (incorrect for most plants — stems transport, not store)
  • Saying photosynthesis produces 'air' instead of 'oxygen'
Worked Example (open-ended)
Q: A student placed a plant in a dark cupboard for 3 days. Explain what would happen to the plant over time and why.

Model Answer: The plant would not be able to carry out photosynthesis because there is no light. Without producing glucose (food), the plant would not have enough energy to carry out life processes, and the leaves would eventually turn yellow and the plant would die.


The Human Digestive System

Model Answer: Saliva contains enzymes that break down starch into simpler sugars (chemical digestion) in the mouth. If the salivary glands are damaged, less saliva is produced, so starch digestion begins later (only in the stomach, if at all), making digestion less efficient.


The Human Respiratory System

Model Answer: During vigorous exercise, muscles work harder and require more energy. To release more energy, the body needs more oxygen for cellular respiration and produces more carbon dioxide as a waste product. The respiratory rate increases so the body can take in oxygen faster and remove carbon dioxide more quickly.


The Human Circulatory System

Key precision vocabulary:
• Arteries carry blood AWAY from heart (remember: A = Away)
• Veins carry blood TO/towards heart
• Note the exceptions: Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood to lungs; Pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood from lungs back to heart

Common mistakes:

  • Saying arteries always carry oxygenated blood (pulmonary artery exception)
  • Confusing which side of the heart pumps to lungs vs body
  • Saying blood 'makes' oxygen (it transports oxygen, not makes it)

Q: A student says, 'Veins always carry deoxygenated blood.' Is this statement correct? Explain your answer.

Model Answer: This statement is not entirely correct. Most veins carry deoxygenated blood (blood with less oxygen) back to the heart. However, the pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the left side of the heart. So while most veins carry deoxygenated blood, the pulmonary veins are an exception.

Model Answer: The digestive system breaks down food into simpler nutrients like glucose, which are absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream.
