The Systems theme is one of the five core themes in PSLE Science (the others are Diversity, Cycles, Interactions, and Energy). For the 2026 PSLE (following the MOE 2023 Primary Science syllabus), the Systems theme covers the Plant System and three Human Body Systems: the Digestive System, the Respiratory System, and the Circulatory System. Understanding how each part works AND how the systems work together is key to scoring in both MCQ (Booklet A) and open-ended (Booklet B) questions.

Parts and their functions:
Photosynthesis equation (word form):
Carbon dioxide + Water → Glucose + Oxygen (in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll)
Key precision vocabulary: 'absorb' (roots/water), 'transport' (stem), 'manufacture/produce food' (leaves), NOT 'make food from sunlight' (imprecise).
Common mistakes:
Model Answer: The plant would not be able to carry out photosynthesis because there is no light. Without producing glucose (food), the plant would not have enough energy to carry out life processes, and the leaves would eventually turn yellow and the plant would die.

Model Answer: Saliva contains enzymes that break down starch into simpler sugars (chemical digestion) in the mouth. If the salivary glands are damaged, less saliva is produced, so starch digestion begins later (only in the stomach, if at all), making digestion less efficient.

Common mistakes:
Model Answer: During vigorous exercise, muscles work harder and require more energy. To release more energy, the body needs more oxygen for cellular respiration and produces more carbon dioxide as a waste product. The respiratory rate increases so the body can take in oxygen faster and remove carbon dioxide more quickly.

Heart → Lungs (blood picks up O2, releases CO2) → Heart → Body cells (blood releases O2, picks up CO2) → Heart (repeat)
Key precision vocabulary:
• Arteries carry blood AWAY from heart (remember: A = Away)
• Veins carry blood TO/towards heart
• Note the exceptions: Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood to lungs; Pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood from lungs back to heart
Common mistakes:
Model Answer: This statement is not entirely correct. Most veins carry deoxygenated blood (blood with less oxygen) back to the heart. However, the pulmonary veins carry oxygenated blood from the lungs back to the left side of the heart. So while most veins carry deoxygenated blood, the pulmonary veins are an exception.
Explain how the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems are interdependent:
Model Answer: The digestive system breaks down food into simpler nutrients like glucose, which are absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the bloodstream. The circulatory system then transports this glucose to all body cells, where it is used in cellular respiration to release energy.

The Human Systems covered are the Digestive System, Respiratory System and Circulatory System. Skeletal System content from older syllabuses should not be included in 2026 PSLE revision.
Breathing (or ventilation) is the physical act of inhaling and exhaling air using the diaphragm and rib cage muscles. Cellular respiration is a chemical process that occurs inside cells, using glucose and oxygen to release energy, with carbon dioxide and water produced as waste products. They are related but different: breathing supplies the oxygen needed for cellular respiration.
The official MOE 2023 Primary Science Syllabus places the learning outcome “recognise that a cell is a basic unit of life” under Cycles in Plants and Animals (Reproduction). The most common ways marks are lost include: using imprecise verbs (saying roots 'drink' water instead of 'absorb'); confusing where nutrients vs water are absorbed in the digestive system; forgetting that arteries do not always carry oxygenated blood (the pulmonary artery is an exception); and not using the precise scientific vocabulary expected by SEAB examiners.
Common command words in Systems questions include 'explain' (give a reason using scientific facts), 'describe' (state what happens without a reason), 'compare' (give similarities and/or differences), 'predict and explain' (state what will happen and why), and 'suggest' (propose a plausible answer based on given information). Always look for the command word first before writing your answer.
