The Cycles theme is one of the five core themes in PSLE Science (the others are Diversity, Systems, Interactions, and Energy). Under the MOE Primary Science syllabus, Cycles covers three repeating-process topics: the water cycle, life cycles of plants and animals, and states of matter and changes of state. The water cycle is the continuous movement of water between the Earth and the atmosphere. It has no true beginning or end — the same water keeps moving around the cycle. The Sun provides the heat energy that drives it, and gravity pulls the water back down.

Water absorbed by plant roots travels up the stem and is released through tiny pores (stomata) on the leaves — this is called transpiration. In Singapore's water cycle, transpiration from trees adds a large amount of water vapour to the atmosphere.
Key precision vocabulary: The gas form of water is 'water vapour' (invisible). 'Steam' is produced only when water boils at 100°C. The white 'mist' you see above a boiling kettle is actually tiny water droplets formed when steam condenses on contact with cooler air — it is not water vapour.

Common mistakes:

Evaporation happens at any temperature and only at the surface of the water, so the puddle slowly turned into invisible water vapour and mixed with the air. A life cycle is the series of stages a living thing goes through from the start of its life until it reproduces and produces the next generation. Life cycles ensure the continuity of a species — animals and plants reproduce so their species continues.
Metamorphosis is the dramatic change in body form that some insects go through. There are two types:

Classification trick for PSLE: when a question describes an unfamiliar organism's life cycle, count the stages and look for the pupa stage. Four stages with a pupa = complete metamorphosis. Three stages, no pupa, young resembles adult = incomplete metamorphosis. This logic works for any organism, even one you have never seen before.

Model Answer: The seed is most likely dispersed by wind. The light, feathery covering increases the surface area of the seed so the wind can carry it further away from the parent plant. This reduces competition between the new plant and the parent plant for water, light and nutrients, helping the species spread and survive.
